About Ikigai Tattoo Studio
Ikigai Tattoo Studio is a custom tattoo studio in Northcliff, Johannesburg, led by Heath, a tattoo artist with over 15 years of experience.
The studio was built around a simple idea: tattoos should be done properly, with time, care, and respect for the person wearing them.
We focus on custom tattooing, Japanese-inspired work, black and grey tattoos, and large-scale projects that need proper planning.
That means listening first. Looking at placement. Thinking about how the tattoo will sit on the body now, and how it may age over time.
The space itself is calm and welcoming, because getting tattooed can feel like a big decision. We want people to feel comfortable asking questions, taking their time, and being part of the process before anything begins.
Meet Heath
Heath has been tattooing since 2011, when he opened one of the first dedicated tattoo studios in his hometown of Potchefstroom.
Over the years, he has built and operated multiple successful studios, refining not only his tattooing but also his understanding of what makes a great client experience. His approach is grounded in careful design, technical precision, and creating an environment where people feel comfortable from the moment they walk through the door.
Today, Heath specialises in Japanese-inspired tattooing, large-scale projects, black and grey work, and custom designs built around the body. He is particularly drawn to the flow, movement, and storytelling found in traditional Japanese art, while still carrying a deep appreciation for the bold blackwork and darker aesthetics that shaped his early years as an artist.
Known for his calm nature and attention to detail, Heath believes great tattoos start long before the machine turns on. Every project is approached with care, whether it’s a first tattoo, a full sleeve, or a multi-session piece planned over months.
For Heath, tattooing has never been just a job. It’s a craft, a lifelong obsession, and a way of helping people turn ideas into something they’ll carry with them for years to come.
